Effect of Fe Addition on Anaerobic Digestion Process in Treating Vinasse: Experimental and Kinetic Studies

Vinasse is a continuously resulting waste by bioethanol industry with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration and large volume. Anaerobic digestion (AD) the best method to treat vinasse because it converts COD biogas, so biogas can support Indonesia's primary energy need. The goal of this study was effect Fe on AD process in treating vinasse. varied 0.06, 0.29, 0.64, 0.99 g/L. results showed that increasing from 0.06 0.29 g/L intensified yield 360% (from 10.8 49.6 mL/g COD). However, further decreased 37.8% 6.7 significantly affected methane formation stage, but not acid stage. A mechanistic model built successfully applied predict process. Based simulation results, resulted highest values YVFA/X2 (yield volatile fatty acids (VFAs) consumption per biomass X2 ), μm,2 (specific growth rate for fCH4 (composition biogas) lowest Ks,VFA (affinity coefficient VFAs consumption), kd2 (death constant kVFA (consumption maintenance). addition until recommended increase quantity quality (methane content reached 53.4%) production.
